Rutheran Sivagnanam

The Chambers are headed by Mr Rutheran Sivagnanam. He is also the founder of the Chambers. Mr.Sivagnanam graduated from the University of Leeds and was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn as a Barrister-at-law. He has received formal training in Construction Law and in particular the use of FIDIC Contracts. During his tenure in London Mr. Sivagnanam was the spondee of Mr. Robert Wright QC of the Erskine Chambers, a specialist Company Law Chambers.

In October 1995 he was called to the Bar at High Court of Malaya and was thereupon offered a placement in Messrs Shearn Delamore & Co.

As the Head of Chambers, Mr. Sivagnanam presides over wide area of practice which encompasses both advisory services and litigation. He still maintains his traditional expertise in industrial law both in terms of advisory services and extensive representation of companies at the Industrial Court and beyond. Apart from this, he is actively involved in both advise and litigation several other fields of law. This would include construction law, public law as well as corporate and commercial law. He is regularly engaged with legal issues concerning the establishment of joint ventures, acquisitions, the law relating to fiduciary obligations between partners, directors, shareholders and others, minority shareholder and regulatory issues. Mr Sivagnanam is also frequently consulted over the establishment and administration of trusts and pension funds.

An area of work which he had constantly been involved in since the onset of the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and again in 2007 entailed the re-organisation and restructuring of companies and advising companies which were managing change. This led to his frequent involvement in trade disputes involving Unions and employers either on a stand alone basis or on an industry basis. He is also actively involved in Capital Markets work in the field of financial restructuring.

This line of work brought Mr. Sivagnanam into frequent contact with the Industrial Court of Malaysia, the High Courts, the Courts of Appeal and the Federal Court in a wide cross section of disciplines and places him in an excellent position to oversee the wide scope of work that we constantly undertake.

Mr Sivagnanam is a member of the:

  • International Bar Association;
  • General Council of the Bar of England & Wales;
  • Society of Conservative Lawyers (UK).

He is also a member of several specialist associations including:

  • Administrative Law Barristers’ Association (UK);
  • Industrial Law Society (UK);
  • Society of Construction Law (UK).
